He was predeceased by: his father Doyle Lee Sowder; his wife Mary Katherine Wicker Sowders; and his siblings, Versey Brady, Ernest Sowder, Jimmy Sowder and Jerry Sowder.

He is survived by: his daughters, Teresa Fay Cobb, Darlene Currin (Tony) and Kitty Reissmann (Karlheinz); his siblings, Geraldine Osborne, Rose Boyd, Geneva Gockel, Charles Sowder, Paul Sowder, David Sowder, Danny Sowder and Joel Sowder; his grandchildren, Stephen Cobb, Brittney Harrington, Jessica McLain, Alexandria Luers, Patrick Luers and Steffen Reissmann; and his great grandchildren, Emmy, Claire, Kyler, Alicia, Emily, Maximilian, Marleen and Leoni.
