He was predeceased by: his father Leslie Matthews, Sr.; his stepmother Elizabeth L. Matthews; and his brother Charles Eugene Matthews. He is survived by: his wife Mary Lou Byrd Matthews; his children, Debby M. Ryan (David) of Wilmington and Danny R. Matthews (Susan) of Supply; his grandchildren, Matthew Clark (Jenny) of San Diego, CA, Anna Murphy (Ryan) of Wilmington, Brian Matthews (Ginny) of Fuquay-Varina, Lauren Smith (Chris) of Wilmington and Kaley Bowers (Michael) of Raleigh; his great grandchildren, Madeline, Mason, Seth, Claire, William, Callie and Lennon; his siblings, Becky Ferrell (Landis) of Raleigh and Leslie Matthews, Jr. (Tunisia) of Suffolk, VA; and his sister-in-law Sue Long Matthews of Ocala, FL. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
