He was predeceased by: his parents, John Clyde Neal, Sr. and Monte Liles Neal; his son John C. Neal, III; and his brother Douglas Neal. He is survived by: his wife Catherine Downer Neal; his grandchildren, Katie Poplin, Elizabeth Poplin Revels, Jennifer Neal, Allan Neal, Michael Poplin, Laura Neal, Liles, Jr, Andrea Neal Pocoroba and Christopher Neal; his great grandchildren, Dominic, Gabriel Pocoroba, Ashlynn, Emma Poplin-Revels and Max Poplin Davis; his sister Mary Frances Gilmore (Jim) of Polkton; his sister-in-law Jane Neal of Morganton; and also Kelli Noble. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews.
