He was predeceased by: his parents, James Wares, Sr. and Joan Dickson Wares. He is survived by: his wife Lillian Herrera Wares; his children, Rachel (Michael Johnson), Caroline (Derek Seyerle), Jacquelyn, Jared and Alexis; his granddaughters, Bristol and Sienna; and his sisters, Doreen (Craig Whitbeck), Christine (Ronnie Eurich), Jeanmarie (Louie Lord) and Joann (David Nestor). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
