He was predeceased by: his parents, Eugene Abernathy and Beatrice Costner (Eddison); his siblings, Becky Chapman, Moe Abernathy and Bayne Abernathy; and his daughter-in-law Carol Ann Abernathy.
He is survived by: his wife Kathey Abernathy; his children, James Abernathy (Candy), Rob Wiles (April), Chad Abernathy (Amanda) and Jennifer Wiles; his adoptive daughter Shannon Patterson; his siblings, Hazel Sumpter, Johnsie "Lulu" Poplin, Roger "Skeet" Abernathy and Glen "Copperhead" Abernathy; his grandchildren, Jamie Aldridge (Trevor), Jimmy Abernathy, Ben Callaghan, Hunter Wiles, Colton Wiles, Kailey Royal and Gage Royal; his great grandchild Wyatt Aldridge; his aunts, Liz Pope and Rene Yates; and also Kenneth Hammock. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Amorem Hospice of Caldwell Care at 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645.
