He was predeceased by: his parents, William Benjamin Merritt and Virginia Murphy Merritt Wilkerson; and his siblings, Lois Johnson, Leonard Merritt and Layne Darrell Merritt.
He is survived by: his daughters, Paula Wagner (Winfred) of Roxboro, NC and Joyce Deese (Gene) of Timberlake, NC; his sisters, Linda Ward (Mike) of Burlington, NC and Laraie Brooks of Mebane, NC; and his grandchildren, Christopher Merritt (Christina), Lauren Gates (Coty), Ashley Sloan (Daniel), Tristan Jett (Cheyenne), McKenna Gattis (Wyatt), Marleigh Merritt, Jeffrey Wagner (Jasmine), Brooke Nowell (Chris) and Hannah Deese (Tyler). He is also survived by twenty-five great grandchildren.
The family suggest that memorial donations be made to the Leasburg Volunteer Fire Department, 5783 NC Highway 119, Leasburg, NC 27291 or Union United Methodist Church.
