He was predeceased by: his parents, Odessa Earley Tipps and Guy Clayton Tipps; and his siblings, John Tipps, Clayton Tipps, Efford Young and Helen Tipps.
He is survived by: his wife Carmen Bonds Tipps; his children, Joe Tipps Jr., Clinton Tipps, Warren Tipps of Newton, Maurice Tipps of Hickory, Johnny Robinson of Hickory, Patrilla Pittman of Hickory, Margret Pounds of Hickory and Cynthia Wilson of Gaffney, SC; his siblings, Frank Tipps of Lawndale, Hazel Craig of Lawndale, Louise Dixon of Lawndale, Diane Reynolds of Lawndale, Mary Lawerence of Hickory and Vera Caldwell of Morganton; and his godchildren, Unltra Rankin, Dean Wimbush and James Rankin Jr.. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
