He was predeceased by: his parents, George Getzen Mathews, Sr. and Hattie Elizabeth Gibson Mathews. He is survived by: his wife Jan-Marie Fesmire Mathews; his children, Jack P. Mathews, Jr. (Carla) of Acworth, GA, James Getzen Mathews (Marie) of Laurinburg, NC, Joshua T. Purvis (Annika) of Greensboro, NC, Adam Z. Purvis (Mandi) of Winston Salem, NC and Heather N. Purvis (Tripp Jeffers) of Winston Salem, NC; his siblings, Hettie Bet Stubbs, Martha "Martie" Odom and George "Buck" Getzen Mathews, Jr.; and his grandchildren, Stewart, Chloe, Xander, Gabriel and Kylie.
Due to the COVID-19 mandate, his celebration of life memorial service is being planned for a later date.
Memorial donations have been requested to be given to Scotland Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 1913, Laurinburg, NC 28353 or Church in the Pines, Laurel Hill, NC.
