He was predeceased by: his wife Gail L. Cauley; his parent Annie C. Murphy; his stepfather Ervin Murphy; his brother William D. Cauley; and his grandson Kevin Murphy.

He is survived by: his children, Roberta Watson (Wendell), Kathy McCutcheon (Jeff) and Tommy Murphy (Gale); and his grandchildren, Michael Murphy, Rachel Smith, Mickey Dotson III, Nathan Dotson, Jessica Melson, Polatty of Kansas and Caitlin Murphy. He is also survived by 24 great grandchildren.
