He was predeceased by: his parents, John Franklin Poteat and Nannie Lee Penson Poteat; and his siblings, Bill, Robert Poteat and Nancy Poteat Alderman.
He is survived by: his wife Bonnie Poteat; his daughter Amy Poteat Kendrick (Joe); his grandsons, Benjamin and Elijah Kendrick; and his siblings, Kay Carter, Joyce Carter, Libby Haskin, Dean Poteat and Judy Simmons. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
