He was predeceased by: his parents, Cleo B. Hawks and Dorothy Louise Russell Hawks; his son-in-law Mark Lenderman; his sister-in-law Debbie Spaugh; and his sister Annette.
He is survived by: his daughters, Amy Askew (Alan) of Wimberley, TX, Tracy Lenderman of Asheville, NC and Stephanie Spargo (Jon) of Rochester, NY; his siblings, Judy Cranford of Blacksburg, VA, Barbara Hemrick (Harold) of Asheboro and Donald Hawks (LuAnn) of Thomasville; and his grandchildren, Lieutenant Austin Askew (Sarah), Specialist Aiden Askew, Ashlyn Askew, Titus Lenderman, Leah Lenderman, Julia Lenderman, Adison Spargo, Kaelyn Spargo, Landon Spargo and Jackson Spargo.
