He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Stanley Nelson, Sr. and Mary Belle Kiser Nelson; and his daughter-in-law Michelle Nelson. He is survived by: his wife Joyce Stack Nelson; his children, Kim Nelson-Wood (Kevin) and Rob Nelson (Amy Rohde); his grandchildren, Danielle Wood, Courtney Nelson (Christian Kampfer) and Hunter Nelson; his brother Bill Nelson; his brothers-in-law, Larry Stack (Jeanne) and Ronnie Stack (Rhonda); his niece Ashley Ogburn (Weston); and his great-niece Ellery.
