He was predeceased by: his parents, Clifford Clarence Keener and Sarah Louise Sanders Keener; his wife Maggie Bell Linker Keener; his son Sherwood Roger Keener, Jr.; and his siblings, J. C. Keener, Clifford Keener, Hyrum Keener, Reid Keener, Doris Lynn, Sarah Hensen and Lorrine Wong.
He is survived by: his children, Kay Keener Smith (Butch) of Kannapolis, Gail Keener Croom of Kannapolis, Rex Keener (Patti) of Salisbury and Gene Downum (Sarah) of Charlotte. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
