He was predeceased by: his parent Howard Alvis Smith Sr.; and his wife Joyce Ann Dowell Smith. He is survived by: his parent Mary Elizabeth Fortson Smith; his children, Teresa S. Freeman (Todd) of Concord, Howard A. Smith III of Kannapolis, Samuel Dion Smith of China Grove, Paul Tyrone Smith (Denise) of Rockwell and Timothy Wade Smith of Honolulu, HI.; and his siblings, Flavel David Smith, Zadie Pettigrew and Dee Vernon. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 12 great- grandchildren and several great- great grandchildren.
