He was predeceased by: his parents, James Dwight Mullis and Margaret Bridie Haney Mullis; and his sister Nancy Carol Wike. He is survived by: his wife Mary Kathryn Niemans Mullis; his children, Danny Mullis (Margaret), Keith Mullis and Jody White (Lloyd); and his stepchildren, Richard Kuhlmann, Gary Kuhlmann (Tina), Linda Snodgrass (Mike) and Robert Ratkowski (Sarah). He is also survived by 17 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
