He was predeceased by: his parents, C. A. Smith and Florence Overcash Smith; his daughter Sherry Bost; and his siblings, Hugh, Hubert, Andrew, Gene Smith, Catherine McCombs, Mary McCoy, Claudia Edwards, Helen Baker and Virginia Maxwell.
He is survived by: his wife Geraldine Moss Smith; his daughter Deborah Lee Smith (Charlie Frederick) of Salisbury; his son-in-law Donald Bost of Mooresville; his granddaughters, Melissa Morris (Jamie), Kelly Wise, Erin Wise and Meredith Bost; and his great grandchildren, Garrett Morris, Brett Morris, Sophie Princess and Daxton Princess. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
