He is survived by: his wife Dee; his son Chris Hughes; his grandchildren, Mia Hughes and Tyler Hughes; his son Kurt Newsom; and his sister Linda Barousse. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Michaels memory.
