He is survived by: his wife Christy Carpenter Thornton; his children, William Edward Thornton (Summer) of Cramerton, NC and Megan Elizabeth Thornton (Justin Jerman) of Cornelius, NC; his granddaughters, Hope and Hannah; his cousin Brenda Swearingen of California; his brother-in-law David Carpenter (Vicki) of Mobile, AL; his nephews, Patrick Carpenter (Mandy) and Chris Carpenter; and his niece Kathryn Spilker (Michael).
