She was predeceased by: her parents, Loy Dixon and Adda Howland McConnell; her siblings, Carey McConnell, Alice McConnell, Edith Davies and Elizabeth Jarrett; her niece Liz Campbell; and also Loy Dixon McCallum.
She is survived by: her husband Dr. Richard T. James, Jr.; her son Arch McCallum (Caroline Smythe); her grandchildren, Conner and Sophie; her son Rick McCallum (Beverly McCallum); her grandchildren, Andrew McCallum, Abigail McCallum and Amanda McCallum Cash (Blair Cash); her great grandchildren, Avery Cash, Addison Cash, Amelia Cash and Bennett Cash; her nephew William J McConnell; her niece Carey Jo Elam; her stepdaughter Linda James (Scott); her children, Matthew (Anna), Jason and Jan Niedringhaus (Chuck); her grandchildren, Erin, Jenna (Jerry) and Alex (Erica); and her son Tom James (Amanda).
She had a lifelong passion for books and reading, culminating in an interview for the Charlotte Library Foundation campaign at age 99.
