“Mr. Phillips was not my first band director, but he was my best. He took a young 7th grade transfer student, who only had music to rely on, and nurtured, guided, and helped mould into a musician who pursued music as a career. I often thought of him as I travelled the world performing, and hoped he would be proud of the musician and man I became. He was a model of grace and charm and I will cherish the lessons and memories he created. Brava, maestro and thank you.”

More substantially, he was a model of the Christian virtues of kindness, patience, forgiveness, and celebration of the good in everyone. He was a reliable source of guidance and encouragement throughout my youth. I never achieved his humble grace, but will always have his example to know when I fall short. Bravissimo, Mr. Phillips!”
