He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Hanlein and Hazel Hanlein; and his sister Harriette Clark. He is survived by: his spouse LaVetta Ellison; his children, Candace Richards (Tim) of Holly Springs, NC and Kenton Hanlein (Desiree) of Germantown, MD; his grandchildren, Tyler Richards and Alexis Hanlein; and his sister Susan Allder of Sterling, VA. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews.
