She was predeceased by: her parents, Gaines Fitzhugh Liner and Lettie Thompson Liner; her brother Gordon Liner; and her husband Marshal Luther Cates Jr.. She is survived by: her children, Virginia, Carolyn Cates of Hillsborough, Marsha Stanley (Lew) of Hillsborough, Marshal Luther "Sandy" Cates III (Nancy) of Hillsborough, Kathryn Cates-Wessel (Gary) of Providence, RI and David Cates (Nancy) of Hillsborough; her sister Margaret Clark of Hillsborough; and her child Box.
