He was predeceased by: his parents, Boyd Abernethy and Gladys Miller Abernethy; his sister Linda Faye Abernethy; and his son-in-law Joseph Travis George Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Judy Barrier Abernethy; his children, Tracy George of Hildebran, NC, Gina Welch (Troy) of Hildebran, NC and Jeremy Abernethy (Amanda) of Hildebran, NC; his siblings, Dale Abernethy (Alice) of Granite Falls, NC, Tammy Gilbert (Douglas) of Hildebran, NC and Brenda Taylor (Douglas) of Marshall, NC; and his grandchildren, Kenneth George (Crystal), Jason George (Heather), Alan George, David George, Belle George, Ashley George, Sydney George, Emery Welch (Madison), Madelyn Welch and Chance Abernethy. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren.
