He was predeceased by: his parents, Rex Thornton and Zelma Thornton; his son Roger Dale Thornton Jr.; and his siblings, Rex Thornton, John Thornton, Jack Thornton, Mary Nicholson and Delphine Surratt.

He is survived by: his wife Nellie "Chi Chi" Thornton; his daughters, Loretta Scarbrough, Kelly Flynt (Todd) and Sheila Whitman (Dennis); his grandchildren, Ben Thornton (Josh), Tyler Flynt, Katie Webb (Michael), Kayla Crabtree (Ben), Amanda Martin (Chris), Jolee Uzzo and Lauren Whitman; and his great grandchildren, Vivianne, Michael and Archer.
