He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Leroy Gilliam and Ruth Knox Chester; his stepfather Ollis Shelby "Red" Chester; his sister Brenda Evans; and his sister-in-law Vivian Gilliam.
He is survived by: his wife Cheryl E. Gilliam; his siblings, Gary Gilliam of Hickory, Vicki Hodges (Randy) of Hickory, Eddie Gilliam (Carolyn) of Hickory and Carl Gilliam Jr. of Georgia; his brother-in-law Garland Wayne "Junior" Evans (Ruth Ann); his nieces and nephews, Bryon Gilliam, Greg Evans (Lindsay) of Hudson, Angie Gilliam Thomas of Bethlehem, Karla Nicole "Nikki" Kovacik (Peter) of Wisconsin and Alicia Gilliam of Hickory; and his pet Benji.
