He was predeceased by: his daughter Laura Cates Spurlin (Katie). He is survived by: his wife Patricia Mull Cates; his son Michael D. Cates (Jennifer) of Hickory; his grandchildren, Andrew Cates (Alyssa), Collin Cates, Jenna Cates, Luke Spurlin and Ryan Spurlin; and his great grandchild Karson Cates.
