He was predeceased by: his parents, Burton Matheson and Laura Hampton Matheson; and his siblings, Hazel Coleman, Myrt Barnard, Maude Neal, Margie Cherry, Bill and Johnny Matheson.
He is survived by: his wife Clyta Russell Matheson; his daughters, Elaine Bearden (Barron) of Dalton and Kathy Ledford of Young Harris, Georgia; his grandsons, Stephen Bearden of Chattanooga and Tim Bearden (Amy) of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and his great grandchildren, Jayden, Caedmon, Peyton Bearden and Nate Bearden. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
