He was predeceased by: his stepsisters, Madeline Cox and Marie Westmoreland. He is survived by: his wife Sylvia Smith; his children, Tonya Canipe (Victor) and Jeffrey Crater (Peggy); his granddaughters, Emily Patterson (Spencer) and Elizabeth Pfaff (William); his great grandchild Emma; his sisters, Betty Masten of Winston-Salem and Linda Campbell of Mooresville; and his brother-in-law Ronnie Rothrock. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Forsyth Humane Society or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice.
