He was predeceased by: his parents, John Thomas and Lois Conner Jones; and his brothers, C. D. and Connor Jones. He is survived by: his wife Ferne Dozier Jones; his children, Joel Jones, Jr. (Tammy) of Greenville, Rick Jones (Sheila) of Greenville, Renee Jones Kirkman (Randy) of Liberty, NC and Neil Jones (Dana) of Lake Royale, NC; his grandchildren, Justin Jones, Lauren Boucher (Paul), Caroline Dunlap (Sam), Amanda Lane (Aaron), Cristen Jones (Jack Farrell), Michelle Kirkman (Sam Albert), Tanner Jones (Catie), Jason Kirkman and Tyler Jones (Julie); and his sisters, Bunny Varnell of Rocky Mount and Johnie Jones of Raleigh. He is also survived by 10 great grandchildren.
