He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie Oscar and Allie Parrott Register; and his siblings, Hubert Clay Register, Graham Brantley Register, Margaret Mae Register, John David Register, William Oscar Register Jr., Anne Lee Register, Joseph Knott Register and Allie Frances Register Carson.
He is survived by: his children, Margaret Ann Kincheloe (Paul C. Jr.) of McLean, VA, James P. Jr. (Winfield Perry) of Pawleys Island, SC and David Alan (Deb Johnson) of Leesburg, VA.; and his grandchildren, Ashley K. Dyson (Patrick) of New York City, James P. III (Katie Elizabeth) of Houston, TX., Brittany A. Register of Baltimore, MD., Conner B. Kincheloe of Beaufort, SC and Cayton Perry Penso (Ryan) of Atlanta, GA.. He is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren.
His recalls making his first contribution to journalism (due to a teletype breakdown at the local weather service) at age 13.
