He was predeceased by: his parents, Carlton "Pops" Cates and Rosanna Brown Cates; and his brother Linwood Dean Cates. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Jean Cates of Greenville; his children, Robin Cates Nicholls (Donald) of Fuquay Varina, NC and Ricky Cates (Jennifer) of Murfreesboro, NC; his grandchildren, Carley Nicholls Long (Travis) and McKenzie Nicholls; his great grandchild Riley Long; and his sister Edna (Danny). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
