He was predeceased by: his parents, Ralph Sr. Benton and Clennie Benton; his sister Frances Horton; and his brother-in-law George Nance. He is survived by: his wife Dora Phillips Benton; his children, Joe Small Jr. (Sandra) and Heather Stembridge (Kenny); his siblings, Bernie Benton (Mahala), Faye Nance and Linda Fields (Tommy); his grandchildren, Jennifer McCotter, Jessica Stembridge, Cortney Henderson, Joseph Small III, Ken Stembridge III, Kandice Stembridge, Tristyn Small and Taryn Small; and his great grandchildren, Jonathan Gaskill, Sophia Buchanan, Addisyn Henderson, Elisha Buchanan and Tinsley Ormond.

In lieu of flowers the family suggested memorial contributions be made to Parkinson's Foundation, 200 SE 1st St. Suite 800.
