He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward Cowell and Lela Cowell; his brother Eddie Cowell; and his granddaughter Summer Swindell. He is survived by: his wife Judi Cowell; his children, Barbara Swindell (Kelly), Christy Cowell Rice and Dee Cowell, Jr. (Julie); his stepchildren, Eddie Kowalski (Jennifer) and Jodi Kowalski; and his siblings, Nathan Cowell (Raye), Nora Cowell Willis (Herbert) and Callaree Cowell Hoffman. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
