She was loved and cherished by many people including: her parents, David Rice Steedly, Sr. and Vera McMillian Steedly; her husband William Randolph Matthews; her daughter Martha Matthews Grimson; her grandchildren, Randy Grimson of Durham and Julia Grimson Simpson (Jason) of Raleigh; her great grandchildren, Nicholas Simpson (Cole) of Raleigh and Olivia Grace Simpson of Raleigh; her sisters-in-law, Ernestine Steedly of South Carolina and LaTrelle Steedly of South Carolina; and her siblings, David, Jr., Wendell, Leonard Steedly and Julia Helen Thomas. She was also cherished by 17 nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.

Memorials to Alzheimer's or dementia research would be appropriate and appreciated.
