He was predeceased by: his parents, James Elvin "Buck" Briggs, Sr. and Gertrude Rhodes Briggs; his wife Anne Stanton Briggs; and his brothers, Baby Briggs and Newt Rhodes.

He is survived by: his children, Stan Briggs (Susan) and Denise Briggs of Raleigh; his granddaughters, Jackie Briggs of Brooklyn and Amy Briggs of Boone; and his sister Frances Stanton of Henderson. He is also survived by cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Graham and/or Union Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund in Kittrell, NC.
