It is with great sadness that we announce the death of James Thomas Umphlett of Gates, North Carolina, who passed away on August 24, 2023, at the age of 85, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, James Elliott and Ruth Spivey Umphlett; his wives, Raye Curle Umphlett and Betty Jo Savage Umphlett; his brothers, Joseph Umphlett and William Umphlett; and his grandson Geoffrey Meinhardt.
He is survived by: his children, Rhonda Umphlett Perry (Mark) of Corapeake, Joseph Leslie Umphlett (Rita) of Carrsville, VA and Betty Jo's; his niece Vicki Hale (Danny) of Gates; his nephew Ricky Byrum (Eva) of Gatesville; and his grandchildren, Dr. Timothy Neal Meinhardt, Robert Umphlett, LeAnna Collins, Randy Umphlett, Leslie Umphlett Smullen, Brianna Byrum, Zachary Byrum, Brandon Wardle, Luther Wardle and Kody Hale.
