He was predeceased by: his parents, James Houston Matthews, Jr. and Annabelle Ziegler Matthews Royster; and his stepfather David Wyeth Royster, Jr.. He is survived by: his stepparent Born March; his wife Alice Stowe Matthews; his daughters, Margaret Sloan Matthews Walthall (Wesley) of Macon, Georgia and Mary Houston Matthews Coker (Cullen) of Macon, Georgia; his siblings, Reverend James Houston Mathews, III (Shay) of Gastonia, Annabelle Matthews Kelly (Bill) of Gastonia and Nora Matthews Hale (Duke) of Rome, Georgia; his sister-in-law Anna Stowe Osborne (Grant) of Asheville; and his uncle B. Frank Matthews II of Gastonia. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as great-nieces and great-nephews.
