She was predeceased by: her parents, Roy Brevard Hartsell and Ruby Morris Hartsell Adams; her husband Kenneth Hilton Parks; her sister Flora Cecelia Nashif; and her stepdaughter Tammy Parks Burgess.

She is survived by: her stepson Douglas Hilton Parks; her daughters, Kennie Protasewich (Rich) and Jill Kiehl; her stepdaughter Angela Parks Fisher; her brother Roy Hartsell (Ramelle); and her grandchildren, Zach, Tyler Sweet, Richard Matthews, Niki Matthews (Bridgette), Spenser Protasewich (Abigail), Luke Protasewich, Adam Protasewich, Justin Kiehl (Cayla), Julianne Fleming (Jonah), Nate Kiehl and Claire Kiehl. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to either of the following, Parkwood Baptist Church, 1827 Dixon Road, Gastonia, NC 28054 or Gaston Christian School 1625 Lowell Bethesda Road, Gastonia, NC 28056.

“Ed and I were so sorry to hear of the passing of Opal…… she was such a sweet and kind soul. Will always cherish the memories we had of the times we spent together at family gatherings. I (Marianne), will never forget our fun times at Surfside Beach. She and I called our selves the modern day ‘Lucy and Ethel’. Our thoughts and Prayers are with you during this time of sadness. May she rest in peace with God and the Angels.”
