She was predeceased by: her parents, Nelson J. Messick and Iva Bailey Messick; her husband Jerry Van Tassel; and her sisters, Bobbie Fox, Patsy Moser and Betty Kendrick.

She is survived by: her children, Rena Abernathy (Joel) and Joel C. Van Tassel (Jill); her granddaughters, Anna and Mary Abernathy; and her brothers, Jimmy Messick and Carlton Messick. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
