He was predeceased by: his father John E. McNamara Sr.; and his brothers-in-law, Gary Hovis and Tom Alden. He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Garland McNamara; his daughters, Amy Lowrance and Katie McNamara; his siblings, Kay Alden, Debbie Harris (Scott), Jane Hovis and Joe McNamara (Kay); and his grandson Logan Lowrance. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gaston Hospice, PO Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054 or Gastonia Church of Christ, 1919 N. New Hope Road, Gastonia, NC 28054, or the charity of your choice.

“I recently sent Birthday Greetings to my friend John. Please accept my condolences to all of his family members. John was one of my best friends during our time in Florida. He was the BEST MAN at my wedding in 1975. Prior to that we worked together and we took weekend trips together. A very important part of my life. My wife Kay and I will certainly miss him. We talked several times over the past few years. My only wish is that I had not spent more in person time, with him Jon & Kay Rudolph”
