He is survived by: his parents, John Thomas Cates and Vera Crunkleton Cates; his wife Natasha Bray Cates; his daughter Aurora Cates; his brothers, Doug Melton, Justin Cates (Julia) and Brent Cates (Wendy); and his nephew Hendrix Cates. He is also survived by numerous other nieces and nephews.
