Phillip Michael Amyx Obituary

Phillip Michael Amyx died on April 20, 2020, at age 48, after a three year battle with colon cancer. Phillip was born on April 10, 1972, in South Korea. In October of 1976, Phillip traveled to Maryland with his younger brother, Matthew, to become part of the Amyx family.

A talented runner, Phillip completed the Gettysburg, Pa., Marathon at age 12. He won the Goodloe Byron Memorial 15 km. Run for his age group in 1981. Phillip was the champion of both the indoor and the outdoor one mile runs for the Frederick County, Md. schools in all three years of middle school. He loved running long distances on Saturday mornings in Maryland with a large group of friends.

In 1987, the family moved to Raleigh, N.C. Phillip loved to grow things, and roses were one of his favorites. He also had a talent for making and fixing things. In high school he designed a beautiful deck for the family home. He graduated from Sanderson High School in 1991. Phillip worked for Food Lion in both Raleigh and Roanoke Rapids before he lost his sight. He was married to Carole Barker of Gaston from 1998 to 2009.

Phillip leaves his parents, Dr. Herb and Pat Amyx of Wake Forest, and three siblings - David (wife Laura) of Raleigh, Dr. Jennifer Amyx of Wake Forest, and Matthew Amyx of Fayetteville. He also leaves three nephews - Christopher, Joshua, and Andrew Amyx, and one niece - Gabrielle (husband Ryan) Maroon; one great niece, Nevaeh Amyx, and one great nephew, Max Maroon. Bryan Holford has been a kind and supporting friend for many years.

The family would like to thank the Duke Eye Center for their excellent care over the years, especially Dr. Pratap Challa, Dr. Melissa Daluvoy, and Dr. Eric Postel. Memorial donations in Phillip's memory can be made online to the Duke Eye Center Research Fund. Burial will be private at the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery in Gaston, NC.
