He was predeceased by: his parents, Allen Thornton and Rettie Darden Thornton; and his siblings, Virginia, Gertrude, Cecil Floyd, William "Short" and Melvin "Buddy".
He is survived by: his wife Mary Jean Hill Thornton; his sons, Scott (Dena) and Tracy (Teresa); his brother Robert Earl; his granddaughters, Jill (Stuart), Jana (Matt), Jenni (Martin) and Jessie (Lucas); and his great grandchildren, Jordan, Rose, Jack, Sarah, Turner and Wells.
