He was predeceased by: his parents, Jonathan Jasper and Bertha Phillips Sullivan. He is survived by: his wife Mary Frances Hatcher Sullivan; his children, James Melvin Sullivan (Terri) of Clayton, Robert Edward Sullivan (Darlene) of Cochranville, PA, Nancy Gwendolyn Byrum (J. G.) of Colorado Springs, CO, Denise Sullivan Harper (Bill) of Washington, NC and Serena Sullivan Luke (Bob) of Four Oaks; and his siblings, Wiley Thompson Sullivan (Margaret) of Nashville, NC, Gene Autry Sullivan (Iris) of Pine Level, Doris Blanche Peele of Virginia Beach, VA and Marverine Faye "Snook" Godwin of Micro. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
