He was predeceased by: his parents, Willis Chavis and Flora Bolling Chavis; his wife Janet Smith Chavis; his siblings, Estelle Chavis, Betty Chavis Mayo, Viola Holland and Nathaniel Chavis; and his niece Linda Simmons Smith.

He is survived by: his sisters, Barbara Lyons and Alice Chavis; his stepsons, Martin and LaVon Dunn; his sister-in-law Reba Chavis; and his nieces, Peggy Hanton, Ernestine Lyons and Doris Simmons.
