He was predeceased by: his parents, Jesse Surles and Cinderella Williams Surles; and his brother Jesse Morris Surles. He is survived by: his children, Joe Surles, Jr., Stacy Surles, Derek Surles, Jovetta Whitfield and Jonathan Surles; and his sisters, Shirley Anderson and Tillie Godwin. He is also survived by nieces and a nephew.
