He was predeceased by: his parents, John William Carswell and Ethel Louise Bright Carswell; his wife Revonda Crowe Carswell; and his sister Judy Bailey. He is survived by: his children, Michelle Carswell Bolding of Athens and Michael Dean Carswell (Julie Collins) of Forest City; his stepdaughters, Donna Michelle Lavender (Dale) of Shelby and Teresa Annette Blackwell (Marion Fred) of Boiling Springs, SC; and his siblings, Ed Carswell (Amy) of Shelby, Barbara Lavender of Ellenboro and Janice Turner of Mooresboro. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
