He was predeceased by: his parents, Marvin Appling and Francis Harrod Appling; his brothers, Donald and Marvin of Corpus Christi; and his grandson Benjamin Carlton Appling.

He is survived by: his wife Kay; his brother Tommy Appling (Cheryl) of Tilden; his nephew Donnie Appling (Reyes) of Corpus Christi; his children, Kenneth Appling (Candise) of Rutherfordton, Adonna West (Terry), Gina Appling (Ricky Humphries) of Forest City and Tracy Appling (Kevin Wong) of Raleigh; his stepdaughter Rhonda Hill (Brad) of Forest City; his grandchildren, Justin Appling, Jessica Appling, Adonna Claire Biel, Alicia Biel, Dylan West, Jenna West and Brooklyn Hill; and his great grandchildren, Malachi Appling, Jocelyn Appling and Kendrick Appling.
