He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Ira J. Smith and Doris I. Smith; his wife Joan Stoughton Smith; his siblings, Kirk F. Smith (Sharon Smith) and Sandra K. Shaheen (John Shaheen); his father-in-law Maurice Stoughton; his siblings-in-law, Tim Stoughton, Emily Olney (Will Olney) and Linda Yetter; his son Ira T. Smith; his daughter-in-law Jewel Davis; his granddaughter Wren Lee Smith; and his son Kenneth R. Smith (Dahnia M. Asfour). He was also cherished by nieces, nephews, and cousins.
