Though James may no longer walk beside us, his memory will forever be enshrined in the fabric of the lives of those James touched, a beacon of light guiding us through the darkness. He is survived by : his wife Bonita Gavin; his children, James William Gavin Jr. and Cornelia Gavin Zanders (Robertino); and his siblings, Marthella Briddell (Karl) and Victor Z. Gavin.

Visitation was held on Friday, June 7th 2024 from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Wiseman Mortuary (431 Cumberland St, Fayetteville, NC 28301). A funeral service was held on Saturday, June 8th 2024 at 2:00 PM at the College Heights Presbyterian Church (1801 Seabrook Rd, Fayetteville, NC 28301). A burial was held on Monday, June 17th 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery (8220 Bragg Blvd, Spring Lake, NC 28390).
